Anxiety Hypnotherapy Research

1.THE EFFICACY OF HYPNOSIS AS A TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY: A META-ANALYSIS
K.E. Valentine, L.S. Milling, L.J. Clark, C.L. Moriarty

This study looked at how effective hypnosis is in treating anxiety compared to other methods. It reviewed 15 studies involving hypnosis for anxiety and found that people who received hypnosis reduced their anxiety more than those who didn’t. The results showed that hypnosis helped better than about 79% of other treatments right after the hypnotherapy, and this improvement increased to better than 84% at later follow-ups. 

Isn’t that astounding…? 

2. Effect of Hypnosis on Anxiety: Randomised Controlled Trial with Women in Postmenopause
R Lynae Roberts, Joshua R Rhodes, Gary R Elkins 

This study focused on treating anxiety with hypnotherapy in postmenopausal women and found that it worked better than other methods. Results showed significant reductions in anxiety levels in a variety of tests from the start to the end of the study and during follow-ups. Women felt less anxious after each hypnosis session, and their levels continued to improve over time. Even though some women were more responsive to hypnosis than others, everyone experienced significant improvements.
This study suggests that hypnosis is a highly effective treatment for reducing anxiety in postmenopausal women.

Understanding Anxiety

You are not broken! Therefore you do NOT need to be fixed…

All fears at their core, are meant to protect you. Put simply: it’s useful because for thousands of years it has stopped us from doing stupid stuff that could otherwise get us killed… 

So it’s not all bad…! But when it misfires in everyday life and your subconscious processes interpret EVERYTHING as dangerous and you can’t stop worrying, feeling anxious and overwhelmed that’s when it is truly debilitating. 

It’s a bit like a faulty smoke alarm that just keeps beeping… Even though you are just boiling the kettle. Then you are left with a huge overreaction from your own mind and body and you end up feeling like you can’t trust yourself anymore. And then very often a fear about getting anxiety sets in… It’s a vicious cycle and even though you may have been anxious for many years you can feel calm and in control again, with the right help and strategy!

95% of all your thoughts, actions and feelings are subconscious – Only 5% are in your conscious control

Which is exactly why Psychology, Counselling, Self-help books etc don’t work. And no matter what you tried in the past: none of it  has ever updated your 95%… And therefore no matter what you did: it did NOT work.

Phobias vs Anxiety vs Panic Attacks

Anxiety is a broad sense of unease, feeling anxious, often with real physical sensations and constant worry or overwhelm. It can be  triggered by various situations or the feeling of “not being good enough.” It can be vague where the person doesn’t even know why exactly they are feeling anxious. A bit like a faulty smoke alarm that won’t stop beeping… 

Panic Attacks are an exaggerated fear response. Once the fear gets too much and it keeps going up and up then it results in a panic attack. Often times people get super anxious about having a panic attack which of course makes everything worse. 

Phobias, on the other hand, are more specific. People with a phobia often feel generally safe in life. Except when faced with their particular fear, which then triggers a strong phobic response. 

And of course, many people with generalised anxiety also have various phobias. 

The reaction to a phobia, such as the fear of snakes, spiders, heights, flying, etc. is ultimately an subconscious attempt at keeping you safe. Yet, even though you may know full well that panicking isn’t the safest response you still can’t stop it. So all that knowledge and understanding does not help, does it?  

Therefore we need to assist your subconscious in learning a new response, one that is more suitable to the situation. E.g. calmly moving away from the situation, picking up the phone and calling for help.

Also, overcoming the phobia does not mean that you would then be going up to the snake to give it a big cuddle. No!!!! 

It is about creating real change so that you have real choices which in turn do a much better job at keeping you safe.
