So what even is anxiety? 

Anxiety is designed to be your body’s natural alarm system. When it’s working well the mind and body respond to real danger or stress by giving you anxious feelings. That is useful. But for many people, it randomly overreacts all the time and it spirals into constant anxiety, fear, overthinking or even panic attacks. In the end, you feel that you just can’t trust your own body and mind any more. 

You might even end up with a vicious cycle of anxiety about having anxiety. And that sucks! 

But here is the good news – You too can set yourself free from anxiety!

You have probably tried lots in the past: Logical thinking, Meditation, other therapies, CBT, Mindfulness etc. And none of that has worked. Understanding Anxiety

You are not broken! Therefore you do NOT need to be fixed…

Anxiety, at its core, is meant to protect you. Put simply: it’s useful because for thousands of years it has stopped us from doing stupid stuff that could otherwise get us killed… 

So it’s not all bad…! But when anxiety misfires in everyday life and your subconscious processes interpret EVERYTHING as dangerous and you can’t stop worrying, feeling anxious and overwhelmed that’s when it is truly debilitating. 

It’s a bit like a faulty smoke alarm that just keeps beeping… Even though you are just boiling the kettle. Then you are left with a huge overreaction from your own mind and body and you end up feeling like you can’t trust yourself anymore. And then very often anxiety about anxiety sets in… It’s a vicious cycle and even though you may have been anxious for many years you can feel calm and in control again, with the right help and strategy!

Anxiety operates outside your conscious awareness and it is immune to logical reasoning. This is why talk therapy, CBT, mindfulness etc. does not really work. These all help mask and manage anxiety but to overcome anxiety you need something much deeper.

This is not about managing anxiety or masking the symptoms, this is about truly setting yourself free so that you enjoy life again, feeling calm, more patient and in control. 

Phobias vs Anxiety vs Panic Attacks

Anxiety is a broad sense of unease, feeling anxious, , often with real physical sensations and constant worry or overwhelm. It can be  triggered by various situations or the feeling of “not being good enough.” It can be vague where the person doesn’t even know why exactly they are feeling anxious. A bit like a faulty smoke alarm that won’t stop beeping… 

Panic Attacks are an exaggerated anxiety response. Once anxiety gets too much and it keeps going up and up then it results in a panic attack. Often times people get super anxious about having a panic attack which of course makes everything worse. 

Phobias, on the other hand, are more specific. People with a phobia often feel generally safe in life. Except when faced with their particular fear, which then triggers a strong phobic response. 

And of course, many people with generalised anxiety also have various phobias. 

The reaction to a phobia, such as the fear of snakes, spiders, heights, flying, etc. is ultimately an subconscious attempt at keeping you safe. Yet, even though you may know full well that panicking isn’t the safest response you still can’t stop it. So all that knowledge and understanding does not help, does it?  

Therefore we need to assist your subconscious in learning a new response, one that is more suitable to the situation. E.g. calmly moving away from the situation, picking up the phone and calling for help.

Also, overcoming the phobia does not mean that you would then be going up to the snake to give it a big cuddle. No!!!! 

It is about creating real change so that you have real choices which in turn do a much better job at keeping you safe.
